Katherine is a science writer and editor based in Santa Fe, NM. She has written for broad audiences, covering topics from conservation and environmental education to technology and writing for the web. She is a stickler for accuracy, but she still loves to weave a good story. She has written for High Country News, Discover, Civil Eats, Modern Farmer, Dorado and Sierra, Edible Santa Fe and New Mexico Kids!. She has also produced audio stories for KSFR and the Santa Fe Institute, and worked as a fact-checker for Discover, Mosaic, and Knowable Magazine.
Katherine currently works as the publications manager at the Santa Fe Institute where she produces stories about the research at the Institute, covering science meetings, research papers, incoming postdoctoral fellows and faculty, and more. She manages a pool of talented freelance writers and and develops SFI’s monthly e-newsletter and quarterly printed newsletter. Prior to joining SFI’s Communications team, Katherine worked with the SFI Press, the book-publishing office of the Santa Fe Institute. She specialized in layout and editing, with a focus on converting print-ready texts into reflowable e-books.
Katherine holds a B.A. in environmental studies and writing from Goshen College. Her career includes experience as an environmental educator, paralegal to a criminal defense attorney, and web content specialist for the City of Albuquerque. She found her way to science writing while working at the ABQ BioPark, a zoo, aquarium, and botanic garden and honed her skills through an editorial internship at High Country News.
